The mobile phone as an ubiquitous capture device

The mobile phone as an ubiquitous capture device  (to record information and visual documentation wherever and whenever it’s needed).

I should think about some of those more often…

  • Remember where you parked;
  • “Wishlist” items you might want to buy later;
  • Show people where you’ve put things;
  • Document your fender bender;

  • Record the hours of a new store;
  • Capture inspiring design;
  • Hunt for houses and apartments;
  • Doublecheck your shopping selection;
  • Document your haircut;
  • Carry your To-do list

Testing Flickr

One more picture from the conference in Geneva about blogs in education.
The story of the picture above is actually quite interesting,… I took it at the conference, uploaded it on flickr thanks to ShoZu and now I publish it on this blog with flickr thanks to the MetaWeblog API. I could have send it directly to this blog by MMS or email but then I would not have had all the “web 2.0 fun”

Note about ShoZu: It tagged all your picture in flickr with ShoZu and also add some sort of description… well it is free software… for now :-)

Note about Flickr: they have a bench of third party apps, a pretty nice API and some libraries to use them (amongst them a PEAR class, a PHP4 and a PHP5 library)

Browsing on mobiles

The Butt Ugly Weblog:

In other news, the new Web Browser for S60 supports cool things like thumbnail views of the pages, AJAX and DHTML for Web 2.0 hype compliancy, and built-in RSS support for following blogs and news. The best part though: it’s got a plugin API, so people can develop new browser plugins for S60, too. It’s cool enough to make a geek drool.

However, while this is very nice, someone might mistake to think that this means that there no longer is a need to create mobile-specific versions of the web. In fact, it becomes more important than ever: while 3G and high-end smartphones will have a browsing experience similar to the laptop, the most phones sold in the world are simple devices with GPRS (roughly the equivalent of a 56k modem) and tiny displays with a very simple browser.

+1
Even those using some high-end smartphones will appreciate if you take care of their screen real estate and navigation experience…

Shozu, to publish from your mobile to FlickR

ShozuI discovered lately Shozu, from their website:
ShoZu is a FREE cool app that makes uploading images from your camera-phone to your Flickr photostream simple. Download the ShoZu application to try it out.
I could not help but test it :-)

Requirement: having a FlickR account and a supported handset
Pretty cool, once that you have subscribed to the service, that you have setup your account, and that it is installed (I ran into some problems when installing it but that was 97% my mistake) you can publish pictures on your FlickR account in a SINGLE click.

Shozu access your local file system and search for pictures:

Shozu
Shozu

If you want to upload an image to your FlickR account just select it in the menu and it will be added the next time you execute a transfer.

Shozu

You can also add a description and a tag:

Shozu

You can check the picture state in the browser:

  • “F” with a green arrow, the picture will be added to FlickR when the next transfer occurs.
  • “F” The picture has been added to FlickR
  • “F” with a bulbe, a description/tag has been added to the picture.

Shozu

Start the transfer:

You can also set it up so that every time you take a picture it will automatically ask you if you want to publish it on your account.

Shozu

Now… with KAYWA you can publish on your blog by MMS or email. Once you have entered your moblogging address to your contacts does not make the publishing process that longer but this kind of application definitely help. I would love to provide this to our KAYWA users.

Possible improvement:
– Choosing the gallery to publish in would be nice.

Similar applications are (not exclusive):
PicoBlogger from PicoStation (tested and talked about it here)
Lifeblog from Nokia (here)
KaBlog (here, here)

FindMe!

Find Me!A service to get lat/long in Switzerland depending on the name of the locality…
Find Me!!

Swiss citizens… if you need to set up lat/long on your blog, like every KAYWA blog, this is the tool you were looking for.

Well done Roberto!!

One of them will be mine… and since the Nokia’s will not be on the market before Christmas, it will most likely be the new iPod (but of course as a true fan of those toys I will not resist next year to buy one of the NSerie)
