Twitter = aggregation for the masses

I think I have been following RSS almost from day 1 (almost). I have been using a feed aggregator almost since Dave Winner – the “inventor” – and his company Radio Userland started to evangelize feeds and more specifically RSS feed (as oppose to Atom format which is a bit more complicated to deploy but expose more feature).

I have always wondered how this invention will actually propagate in the masses. The RSS icon is not so user friendly and still does not talk much to my mom, adding a feed to an aggregator is not so obvious, real feed aggregator (like Google’s reader) remains very geeky… somehow with Netvibes, My Yahoo and alike we reach a state where it can be use by slightly bigger population than just the nerds but in my opinion it is still not very satisfying. That’s where Twitter becomes REALLY powerful. From a "share my status and what I am doing" tool they reach the state of being the aggregator of the masses. Everyone shares its links on his/her Twitter channel. Thanks to the API, big medias publish links to their online content as soon as it’s published, blog plateform let you use plugin that will publish any update from your blog on your Twitter channel, not to mention all other tools build up on top of the API that lets you share picture, video, status, and links… ie. Twitter has become the aggregator for the masses.

How is that good for the "Enterprise world ?

Yet another one of this technology coming from the consummer that will end up in the enterprise world. To the question what is the best way to share knowledge within all employees and workers I bet that Twitter could do the job. A tool like Twitter seems a perfect fit to share status, project update, website update, in a way where actually everyone (or almost everyone) will use it. In some other words I do believe in tools like Yammer (never tried it though) that won the Techcrunch 500 last year.

With that in mind we might as well check out product like Bantam, a social CRM that lets you communicate, share information and manage relationships inside and outside an organisation, ie. a Facebook-like for enterprise.

Via Raph je découvre quelques règles pour Twitter proposées par Chryde (vous suivez là ?) que je reproduis en substance ici…

Rule1: Twitter tu n’utiliseras pas pour éructer ou exprimer une frustration passagère
Rule2: Tu ne mettras pas de lien sans un minimum de contexte
Rule3: Tu n’ajouteras pas bêtement ta voix à une clameur collective
Rule4: Tu ne poseras pas une question sans avoir fait un minimum de recherche toi même

Toutes ont du sens, même si je trouve la première un peu sèvère parce que Twitter est à mon avis quand même un peu là pour exprimer ses frustrations… mais la quatrième fait vraiment mouche! Ma claque de ces gens qui posent des questions à tout va, mettent à contribution leur “communauté” sans avoir même chercher un tout petit peu… y’en a qui confondent vraiment “Web 2.0″ et “Web des fainéants”!

Twitterific is one of the well known application in the app store for Twitter on iPhone. I installed it and used it for a while until I recently found out about Hahlo, a web based mobile client for Twitter. Awesome!! When using both you do not see which one is web based!

L’interface de Wikio sur iPhone est plutôt sympa, mais le problème rencontré par Wikio est le même que celui rencontré par tous les agrégateurs de contenu lorsqu’il s’agit de développer pour les mobiles (iPhone y compris), à savoir qu’ils ne peuvent contrôler que la source vers laquelle ils renvoient est adaptée à la navigation mobile. Ceci peut avoir un effet désagréable pour l’utilisateur (sur son portemonnaie et/ou son expérience utilisateur).
Une solution consisterait peut-être à insérer une page intermédiaire qui permettrait d’avertir l’utilisateur qu’il se dirige vers un site potentiellement non adapté à la navigation mobile et/ou proposer l’utilisation d’un transcodeur pour mobile (comme Mowser, Skweezer,…).

Dopplr recently launched a new version called “Copenhagen” and amongst the new features there is this possibility to insert new trip to Dopplr directly via Twitter (and also by SMS or email). All you need to do is reply to Dopplr with the trip information (eg. “A trip to Helsinki on May 19 to May 23″). Mixin is also using Twitter to feed your social agenda. Problem is that every service requires to fit a given format (for Twitter: “mention a placename and two dates, including the month both times”) that 1) you have to remember, 2) is most likely not compatible with other service. Next step would be to feed those services with natural language…

Also it is interesting to see that Twitter is becoming the “de facto” status aggregator as it is used to feed other services (it is a bit surprising as well given the lack of reliability of this tool that keeps on crashing).

Automattic released a new theme called Prologue which transform a Wordpress blog into a Twitter-like tool. This is awesome! Will fit so well into an existing community or on an intranet! This is definitively underestimated! Might try to integrate that on an existing community to see how it goes.

Chris Borgan: Prologue is More Than We Are Considering, “Install WordPress on a web server inside the firewall and you’ve solved the “private implementation” of Twitter”, yeap!

On a sidenote, I need to change the layout of this blog to make it more micro-blogging friendly… I want to be able to write 160 chars post without title and stop posting on Twitter.
