I attended last week Lift08. Great event. All speeches are online thanks to a partnership with TSR/nouvo.ch so you can catch up with the conference (but hey guys @ TSR, where are the permalinks for the video???), but the “networking/meeting people” part and the workshops would remain missing.

It was my 3rd time at Lift (out of 3) and I was afraid that while growing, it would become more “commercial” and lost its appeal likewise some other conferences (leweb for instance). I was relieve to see that besides very few speeches, the speakers were there to share (and not to sell) and I very much like that spirit. Keep it like that and I will be back next year, and the year after,…

I liked: the “off” area with the various performance, the one-track session, the Venture night (with Viewdle, Mixin, Wua.la, Holistis on stage…), the workshops, meeting new people, meeting “old” people, Pierre Bellanger, Jonathan Cabiria, Younghee Jung, Rafi Haladjian, Kevin Marks and all the rest.

I liked it not-so-much: the food (who cares?), not being able to ask question (I never do anyway), missing some people who I know was there (there is room for a personnal project/product to address that), the “ubiquitous” CoComment (ok I am slightly exagerating on that one, but I can not believe they have been selected for the Venture Night, they have been around for more than 3 years, took off like hell, went down a bit and never took off again. I have heard the words “acharnement thérapeutique” – not sure how to say that in english)

Del.icio.us and Digg (and other Digg-like) use voting mechanism.
Wikio uses a bit of both as well makes use of a semantic engine to categories the blogs.
Google as very complex algorithm.

I guess I’d like a service that “simply” make use of the number of comments in a post/blog. One could argue that this is exactly what coComment or co.mments.com is about but it does not seem to do exactly the job. coComment has ranks for posts and blogs but it is polluted by spam. So much that it actually makes it unusable, plus some features are missing. It would be nice to be able to set up our own timeframe (not only the last 10 days) and then add some filters (only french blogs, sport blogs). Maybe those filters could be added on top of the service but unfortunately coComment (neither co.mments.com) seems to have an API. This would really help to find out where does the discussion is happening.

Anyway the best ranking service one could think about is probably a very well-thought mix of all of these… to come I guess. Would be nice a nice mashup…

On a side note, I’d like to add that I have been testing the coComment Firefox extension. Kinda disapointing, it does not seem to work with all blogs (especially not with the I comment the most) plus it seems to be uncompatible with Prototype library (some website using Prototype did not work any more)

I have never been a big fan of Technorati. Monitoring content of millions of blogs is not an easy task for sure and they are facing big competition, but for me they really benefited from a lot of buzz and not that much deserved.

Now… they might be releasing new feature like Technorati Topic they still face availability problem (they always had), spam issue, and the CEO and founder, David Sifry, has step down a few weeks ago (together with a few other).

Unfortunately imho there is only one outcome possible: end of business

While trying to finish to define some KAYWA standard microformats I ran into hAtom. Not a bad idea to take existing xml structure to add semantics to xhtml. It just sort of deprecates everything I have done so far…
Ah well…
Then there will be the Structured Blogging initiative to handle appropriately…

This toy is really dangerous. There is two of them in KAYWA’s office now (Roger’s and mine)… and guess what ? you might heard more about here in the future… I am totally addicted!
Roger already suggested two links that explains the design process for the PSP. Not much change than for a normal web site just uses a CSS that would handle a 480 pixels screen width!

I have also found an emulator though I did not succeed yet to have it working, but does not really matter since the PSP browser is as powerful as any desktop browser, resizing your desktop browser is the best emulator :-) I also found a way to read RSS feeds with MioMediaBox.

Back to my game now… I mean to work :-)
